About the Anniversary Dinner
Each year, the Law Center’s Anniversary Dinner brings together our community to honor the exceptional efforts of a few key individuals for their outstanding leadership in the gun violence prevention movement. The dinner, with an audience of 500–700 attorneys, business professionals, lawmakers, and advocates from all over the country, is a truly unique opportunity to recognize the movement’s champions, celebrate the Law Center’s remarkable achievements, and support the fight for smart gun laws that save lives.

Current member tickets for sale May 1–June 20 for $150. Early Bird Tickets for non-members will be for sale May 9–June 1 for $195. Nonmember tickets will be for sale June 2–June 20 for $250.

Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom has been a longstanding voice for sensible firearms policy reform. While mayor of San Francisco, he led the charge against unregulated gun shows in neighboring Daly City and served as a founding member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns. This year, Newsom coauthored the Safety for All Act, a ballot measure to close dangerous loopholes in California’s gun laws. The Law Center is thrilled to honor Newsom with our 2016 Courageous Leadership Award for standing up to the gun lobby and empowering voters to protect their communities and families.

DeVone Boggan is the founder and CEO of Advance Peace, a community-driven, developmental strategy to end urban gun violence. Boggan previously led the Office of Neighborhood Safety in Richmond, CA, where he oversaw a 75% drop in gun violence after implementing comprehensive, community-based intervention programs. We are proud to recognize Boggan with our 2016 Distinguished Service Award for his innovative approach to reducing the devastating violence in our most at-risk communities.

Richard W. Odgers Pro Bono Partner Award

When Pleasant Hill, California, enacted a package of smart gun laws designed to regulate gun dealers, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, which represents the gun industry, swiftly sued the small city, hoping to intimidate it into reversing course. Keker & Van Nest LLP bravely partnered with the Law Center to defend Pleasant Hill from this spurious, costly litigation, devoting countless hours to the case, ultimately leading to its dismissal. Keker also partnered with the Law Center to prepare a highly influential amicus brief in litigation involving Florida’s onerous preemption law, which bars municipal governments from legislating for local public safety.

Pro bono partners like Keker enable the Law Center’s essential work and are a key component to the gun violence prevention movement’s success, particularly in the courts, where more than 93% of challenges to firearms laws have been rejected since the Supreme Court’s landmark Heller decision in 2008. We are deeply grateful to Keker and its attorneys for their outstanding commitment to our mission.

RICHARD W. ODGERS PRO BONO PARTNER AWARD

Richard W. “Dick” Odgers (1936–2014) was a beloved founder, supporter, and friend to the Law Center. He helped found the organization after the 101 California Street shooting and served as the organization’s first president, staying active on the board for 16 years. In 2015, we renamed our annual pro bono partner award after Odgers, paying tribute to his remarkable legacy as an attorney and champion of smart gun laws.
