In our publication 2013 State Scorecard: Why Gun Laws Matter, the Law Center ranked each state based on a review of state laws in 30 different firearms-related policy areas. Maryland ranked 4th out of 50 – having some of the strongest gun laws in the country.

In 2013, the Maryland legislature enacted new laws that relate to firearms. These new laws are described below.

Laws that Strengthen Gun Regulation

MD S 281 Strengthens assault weapon ban, bans large capacity ammunition magazines, provides a mechanism to remove firearms from unstable individuals, regulates ammunition possession, requires a handgun license, requires registration for new residents, and requires lost or stolen firearm reporting

Maryland had the 17th lowest rate of gun deaths per capita among the states in 2010. In that year, 538 people died from firearm-related injuries in Maryland. In 2009, Maryland supplied the 33rd highest number of crime guns to other states, and imports many more crime guns than it exports.
