LCPGV’s 16th Anniversary Dinner — Wednesday, July 15, 2009 — The Palace Hotel, San Francisco, CA — A Time to Reflect… A Time to Act

Posted on Monday, June 4th, 2012

Each and every day we see evidence of how gun violence continues to plague our country — from Oakland, California to Binghamton, New York. The images and stories we see and hear remind us that the over abundance of guns in our communities has a tragic impact on our nation, and underscores the importance of LCPGV’s ongoing mission. LCPGV’s 16th Anniversary Dinner was a chance to mark the successes of our work and the efforts of our larger community — activist members, institutional supporters, pro bono attorneys, and volunteers. It was also a call to action for the work ahead in preventing gun violence. Please join us for an inspirational evening honoring those at the forefront of our shared mission and remembering those who have been affected by gun violence.

Who Will Face Down the Gun Lobby?

Our keynote speaker, Op-ed columnist and political commentator E.J. Dionne, Jr., has been a fixture in the American political landscape for 30 years. An outspoken supporter of gun violence prevention measures, Dionne was unflinching in his criticism of leaders who have failed to address the epidemic of gun violence plaguing our country.

The evening gave us the opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding pro bono contributions of eleven firms. LCPGV Legal Director, Julie Leftwich presented certificates to the following firms who have generously given pro bono support to our work: Bingham McCutchen LLP, Farella Braun + Martel, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, Howrey LLP, Manat, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP, Morrison & Foerster LLP, Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP, Nixon Peabody LLP, Pillsbury and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP.

LCPGV thanks our 2009 sponsors!

Firearms Sales Study Issue Vote – September 27th 2011

City Council Firearms Sales Study Issue Vote
Council Chambers, Sunnyvale Planning Commision
Sunnyvale, CA 7:00 PM

Show Your Support by Attending the Sunnyvale City Council vote on Regulating Gun Dealers

The City of Sunnyvale regulates car washes and day care centers more strictly than firearms dealers. That’s why a firearms dealer was recently allowed to open a store in close proximity to three schools with no notice to the public or special security measures required. Concerned residents brought the matter to the attention of the City Council last year and the result was a year-long study that recommended the City Council regulate firearms dealers. Specifically, the study committee recommended requiring dealers to obtain a permit, implement security measures, locate away from schools and ensure that employees are eligible to handle firearms. On September 27th at 7:00 p.m., the City Council will consider whether to adopt these recommendations.

The gun lobby has vowed to come from all corners of the Bay Area to voice opposition to these reasonable precautions.  Please come to the meeting and join LCPGV in voicing support for the adoption of common sense regulation of firearms dealers in Sunnyvale.

Please show your support for safer communities by joining LCPGV staff and other concerned citizens at the hearing on Tuesday. For location and other details, visit Sunnyvale’s website here.

If you are unable to attend, you can also provide your feedback by sending an e-mail to:FirearmSales@ci.sunnyvale.ca.us

Firearms Sales Study Issue Hearing
Council Chambers, Sunnyvale Planning Commision
Sunnyvale, CA 8:00 PM

Sunnyvale residents recently expressed their concern to the Sunnyvale City Council and Mayor Hamilton about the proximity of a new gun store that opened less than a mile from two elementary schools and a preschool. Unlike numerous other cities in California, Sunnyvale does not regulate the location or operation of firearms dealers. In response to the complaints, the Sunnyvale City Council requested a study of the issue and gathered feedback from the community.

On Monday, August 22nd, 2011 at 8:00pm the Sunnyvale Planning Commission will hear public comment on the issue and will vote on a recommendation for the City Council (whether to regulate firearms dealers or do nothing).

Read LCPGV’s letter in support of regulating firearms submitted to the Sunnyvale Firearms Sales Study Committee.
