Federal Law on Guns in Vehicles

Notwithstanding federal, state or local law, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by 18 U.S.C. § 921 et seq. from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm may transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he or she may lawfully possess and carry a firearm to any other place where he or she may lawfully possess and carry a gun if, during the transportation, the firearm is unloaded and neither the firearm nor any ammunition is readily accessible from the passenger compartment of such vehicle.1 If a vehicle does not have a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment, the firearm or ammunition must be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.2
