Among other things, Michigan:

  • Requires a handgun purchaser to first complete a safety questionnaire, undergo a background check, and obtain a handgun purchase permit, valid for 10 days, or a concealed handgun license;
  • Requires the reporting of handgun purchases to law enforcement; and
  • Requires firearm owners to report the theft (but not the loss) of any firearm.

Michigan does not, however:

Michigan ranks 23rd among the states in number of gun deaths per capita. In 2009, 1,095 people died from firearm-related injuries in Michigan. In 2009, Michigan supplied the tenth lowest number of crime guns to other states per capita, and the state imports more crime guns than it exports.
