The people of Oakland suffer greater loss of life and injury from gun violence than other cities in the bay area. The unimaginable pain and loss felt by the families of every victim also echoes throughout the community each and every time it happens.

We work tirelessly at the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence because we know their deaths were preventable. This is a hard truth to face in the wake of each tragedy, but one that must be faced. The issue of gun violence in Oakland is unacceptable, and while complicated, we can address this problem with intelligent, courageous action, and we will not rest until we do.

You can do something too.

Join the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, The Oakland Tribune, and the Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education this Thursday where Juliet Leftwich, our Legal Director, will lend her expertise on a panel entitled:

Guns: An American tradition or community crisis?

The forum will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. June 28, at Nile Hall, 668 13th St. inside Preservation Park in downtown Oakland. The event is free and open to the public.
