Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Law Center’s 21st Anniversary Dinner. We were honored to have the opportunity to award Anne Marks from Youth ALIVE! and Gabrielle Giffords and Mark Kelly for their meaningful work. If you missed the event, watch the highlights and hear what Gabby and the other speakers wanted to share with the crowd:

Thirteen-year-old Sukari Wright, a poet with Youth Speaks, also shared her incredibly moving experience with the crowd:

The Law Center’s Anniversary Dinner is always a meaningful event that brings together our community to honor the exceptional efforts of a few key individuals for their outstanding leadership in the gun violence prevention movement. The dinner, with an audience of 500 – 700 attorneys, legal and business professionals, and advocates for smart gun laws from all over the country, is a truly remarkable event without parallel.

We were pleased to honor Gabrielle Giffords and Mark Kelly as well as Youth ALIVE! for their courageous work on this issue at this year’s event.

Thank you to all who joined us on June 25th as we marked 21 years of the Law Center’s work saving lives with smart gun laws, honored outstanding leadership in our community, and energized the efforts of the national movement.

On January 8, 2011, a mentally ill young man shot Congresswoman Gabby Giffords in the head, killed six of her constituents, and wounded 12 others. Since that tragedy in Tucson, America has seen too many more mass shootings, but with no response from Congress. This inaction on the crisis of gun violence in America was thrown into even starker contrast after the massacre of twenty children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012.

On the second anniversary of the horrific Tucson shooting, as America mourned the dead in Newtown, Gabby and her husband, retired Navy Captain and astronaut Mark Kelly, launched Americans for Responsible Solutions to encourage elected officials to stand up for solutions to prevent gun violence and protect responsible gun ownership.

Since, Giffords and Kelly have been fighting for strong solutions to gun violence in Congress and in states across the country. They have continued to remind our leaders that Americans are demanding responsible solutions to the epidemic of gun violence in our nation.

The Law Center’s board and staff proudly honored Mark and Gabby at our 21st Anniversary Dinner, and together envisioned the future of the gun violence prevention movement.

Every year, we gather to mark the anniversary of our organization’s founding with a special event to remember the lives that were taken on July 1, 1993, as well as the unacceptable toll of lives taken by gunfire every day. Our Anniversary Dinner is also a time to look to the future as we develop real and lasting solutions to gun violence.

Youth-AliveYouth ALIVE!

Based in Oakland, Youth ALIVE! believes that urban youth have the innate capacity to stop the violence plaguing our communities. With courage and relentlessness, their innovative programs nurture youth leaders to advocate against gun violence, and reach out victims of gun violence—including families of homicide victims—to support healing and save lives.

We very proudly honored Youth ALIVE! with our 2014 Courageous Honoree Award for their unique and fearless approach to preventing gun violence in their community.
